Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

In my last question, I analysed my target audience and what appeals to them. I had to incorporate these into my magazine when designing the unique selling points and how I could attract customers.

The large photo on my front cover immediately stands out from the black background and I believe that the strong contrast on the cover will make my magazine stand out amongst others. The pull quote/lure associated with the picture; "this just doesn't seem real" draws the reader to the magazine as they want to understand the meaning behind the quote. When taken out of context, the quote makes viewers curious as to the rest of the article.

I tried to include many unique selling points on my magazine cover in order to attract people to buy it. The sticker on the top right of the magazine cover is large and includes the words 'free Mumford and Sons' poster. The word 'free' automatically draws people towards the magazine. Cover lines such as 'exclusive interview' draw people towards the magazine as it shows that there is something unique in my magazine which isn't found in others.

My colour scheme was an important part of the magazine. I wanted it to readable by both boys and girls so I couldn't create a biased colour scheme. I believed that the scheme of red, black and white was neutral, compared to the stereotypical blue for boys and pink for girls. These colours also stand out well when put with each other, so when attracting my audience I highlighted key words on my cover in red to stand out more. Words such as 'reviewed' and 'Jenna Moore' were in red, despite the surrounding text being in white or grey. This draw readers eyes to certain aspects of the magazine before they look at the rest.

I believed that the photo used on the magazine cover could attract people of both genders, as the artist portrayed can be found attractive and idolized. It was harder to attract my audience with imagery as you could address them directly using words. By having artist names they like and USPs on my magazine cover, it was more likely to attract my target audience.

The mode of address was important, especially when creating the double page spread. After researching other magazines, they often used colloquialisms and non formal language when interviewing an artist. This created a more realistic feel and allowed the reader to feel as though they were part of a conversation rather than just reading an article. The magazines draw in their audience this way and I had to write in this way when making my double page spread.
